Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Sometimes. Most health plans decide this for themselves, so it depends on your plan and your state. Medicare Part B covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain. Ask before you book: which conditions are covered, how many visits, and whether you need a referral.
What to do
- Look up "acupuncture" in your plan's Summary of Benefits, or call the number on your card.
- Ask which conditions are covered, how many visits a year, and what you pay per visit.
- Ask for an in-network acupuncturist, and whether you need a referral or approval first.
What to say
Is acupuncture covered under my plan, and for which conditions? How many visits a year, and do I need a referral or approval first?
Write down the name of the person you spoke to, the date and a reference number.
What to watch out for
This is a sensitive stepSmall details here can change the outcome, and some mistakes are hard to undo. We highly recommend a free 15-minute call with us before you decide.
Booking first and asking later. Many plans cover acupuncture only for certain conditions, only with an in-network provider, or only up to a set number of visits. One call before the first visit tells you what you will pay.
Also: if you are choosing a plan for next year, check this before you sign up, not after.

We’re here to help
Plan documents rarely say "acupuncture" in plain words. It can sit under rehab, alternative care, a rider or an extra benefit, with limits that are easy to miss.
We can go through your plan with you, find what it covers and what it doesn't, and work out what you would pay. If you are still choosing a plan, we can compare two or three side by side. Book a free 15-minute call and bring your plan details.
Every situation is different, and these are sensitive moments, so we look at yours with care. We often see what others miss, and we never take commissions from insurance companies: the only thing we are working for is what is right for you.

The rule behind it
No federal rule requires private health plans to cover acupuncture, so each plan sets its own rules, and some states add their own. Medicare Part B covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain (National Coverage Determination 30.3.3, since January 2020): up to 12 visits in 90 days, 8 more if you are improving, and no more than 20 a year. Chronic low back pain means pain lasting 12 weeks or longer with no other known cause, such as surgery, pregnancy, infection or cancer. It must be given by a doctor, or by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant with acupuncture training and a state license, or by a licensed acupuncturist working under their supervision. Medicare can't pay licensed acupuncturists directly. You pay 20% after the Part B deductible. Medicare Advantage plans must cover at least this, and some cover more.
